Why You Need Cuticle Oil

I know, I know you’re probably all sick of me banging on about it – but I promise you, there isn’t a nail tech in the world who doesn’t recommend cuticle oil.

If you’re a client of mine, you’ll already know the delicious range of scents I stock for the end of your service (from chocolate orange, to mango to blueberry cheesecake, don’t say I don’t treat you all hehe). But apart from smelling good enough to eat and making your fingers look glossy for my Instagram, did you know there are actually major benefits of using cuticle oil on a daily basis?

So, what is cuticle oil?

To make a long story short, cuticle oil is essentially a moisturiser specifically for your cuticles and nails.

How many of you moisturise religiously when you’re fresh out of the shower? And how many of you use lip balm regularly to make sure your lips aren’t dry and chapped? So why do we forget about our nails?

You wouldn’t wash your hair and not use conditioner – our nails are made from the same stuff!

What are the benefits of cuticle oil?

Cuticle oil is absolutely essential when it comes to keeping your nails strong and healthy. Not to mention the fact that it keeps your mani looking fresher for longer. What’s not to love?!

It promotes strong, healthy nails

Your nails are made in your nail matrix. This is essentially where your nails grow from (which is why you get growth).

When you use cuticle oil and massage it in, it gets absorbed into the skin cells in your nail matrix. In doing this, it keeps your nail matrix well moisturised and healthy – ready to produce healthy new nail growth!

The action of massaging the oil in also helps promote circulation – a win and win really!

It makes your fingers look healthy

There’s a reason I slather your nails in cuticle oil before photographs and not after – it makes your nails look flawless.

No one wants dry, cracked skin around their nails – and with handy cuticle oil pens, there’s no reason to not have beautiful nails all around.

Want to quickly freshen up your mani before a meeting or a date? No problem! Douse yourself in cuticle oil, rub in and you’re good to go.

It helps makes your mani last longer

Believe it or not, keeping your nails moisturised helps prevent the potential chipping and peeling of your gel mani. How does it do this?

This is going to sound a bit weird, but your nails act in a very similar way to a leaf.

When hydrated, leaves are strong, green, vibrant and luscious. They look healthy. When your nails are hydrated, they are also healthy, strong and luscious (although maybe not green!).

As leaves dry out, they get more brittle and start to shrivel, and yes – your nails do the exact same. It’s also the reason why you may notice more breakages in the colder months and why your nails thrive in the warmer months.

If your nails aren’t hydrated and they are drying out and shrivelling, this mean they’re pulling away from the gel, and gel can only do so much. It’s this constant slight pulling away action that unfortunately, can help your mani lift.

Obviously, I can’t force you into using cuticle oil, however, if you do decide you want to venture down the path of deliciously scented cuticle oils, I promise you, you will notice a positive difference.

Don’t forget – I stock the OMY cuticle butters and Nail Order cuticle oils I use at your appointment, so drop me a message if you want to take one home with you at your next appointment and feel like you’ve come fresh out of the nail room in the comfort of your own home!
