Summer Nail Prep: Getting Ready for Sandal Season

It’s that time of year again when the sun starts shining brighter, the days get longer, and suddenly you realise your feet have been hiding in socks and boots for months. If you’re anything like me, the thought of revealing your toes to the world can be both exciting and slightly panic-inducing.

But don’t worry – with a little preparation and some tender loving care, you’ll have your feet sandal-ready in no time.

Start with the Basics: A Good Old-Fashioned Soak

There’s something wonderfully therapeutic about soaking your feet after a long day, and it’s the perfect first step in your summer nail prep routine. Fill a bowl with warm water and add a handful of Epsom salts or a few drops of your favourite essential oil. Peppermint oil is brilliant for tired feet, while lavender will help you unwind. Soak for about 10-15 minutes – just long enough to soften up any stubborn dead skin and relax those hardworking feet.

While you’re soaking, take a moment to appreciate this little bit of self-care. We spend so much time rushing around that we forget to pamper ourselves. Consider this your permission to slow down and enjoy the process.

Exfoliate Away Winter’s Remnants

Once your feet are nice and soft, it’s time to tackle any rough patches. A good foot scrub or pumice stone will work wonders on areas like your heels and the balls of your feet. Don’t go too aggressive here – gentle, circular motions are your friend. You want to remove dead skin, not create raw patches that’ll make wearing sandals uncomfortable.

If you don’t have a proper foot scrub at home, you can easily make one with ingredients from your kitchen. Mix some brown sugar with olive oil and a squeeze of lemon juice. The sugar provides gentle abrasion, the oil moisturises, and the lemon adds a fresh scent that screams summer.

Nail Care: The Foundation of Great-Looking Feet

Now for the main event – your toenails. Start by removing any old polish completely. Don’t rush this step; leftover bits of colour can make your new polish look patchy. If you’re removing gels, I have a handy guide here – if it’s just normal nail polish – a standard nail polish remover will work just fine. Just remember to take your time.

Next, trim your nails straight across, then gently file the corners to prevent ingrown nails. The ideal toenail shape is slightly rounded at the edges but not too curved. Remember, toenails should be cut shorter than fingernails, but not so short that they’re uncomfortable in shoes.

Push back your cuticles gently with a cuticle pusher or even just a clean towel. A drop of cuticle oil massaged in will keep them soft and healthy-looking.

Moisturise Like Your Life Depends on It

Dry, cracked feet are nobody’s friend, especially when you’re trying to rock your favourite sandals. After all that exfoliating and nail work, your feet will be crying out for moisture. Choose a rich foot cream – something heavier than your regular body lotion.

Pay special attention to your heels and any other areas that tend to get dry. If your feet are particularly rough, consider using a foot mask or applying a thick layer of cream before bed and popping on some cotton socks. You’ll wake up with baby-soft feet.

Colour Me Happy: Choosing the Perfect Polish

Here’s where the fun really begins. Summer is the perfect time to experiment with colours you might not usually try. Bright corals, electric blues, sunny yellows – the world is your oyster. If bold isn’t your style, classic reds and soft pinks are always elegant choices that complement any outfit.

Before applying colour, use a base coat to protect your nails and help your polish last longer. Apply thin coats rather than trying to get full coverage in one go – this prevents streaking and helps your manicure last longer. Two thin coats of colour followed by a top coat is usually perfect.

Maintenance Made Easy

The key to keeping your feet sandal-ready all summer long is consistency. A quick file and fresh coat of top coat once a week will keep your pedicure looking salon-fresh. Keep a small bottle of your chosen polish handy for touch-ups – we’ve all been there when a perfect pedicure gets chipped just before a special occasion.

Don’t forget to moisturise your feet daily, especially after showering. It only takes a minute but makes a world of difference in keeping your skin soft and preventing cracks.

Ready to Strut Your Stuff

With properly prepped feet and gorgeous nails, you’ll feel confident slipping into any sandal style this summer. Whether you’re heading to the beach, attending garden parties, or simply enjoying warm weather walks, your feet will be ready for their close-up. Remember, the best pedicure is one that makes you feel fantastic, so choose colours and styles that bring you joy. After all, summer is about feeling carefree and confident – and there’s nothing quite like perfectly polished toes to give you that extra spring in your step.
